The Monash University Philharmonic Society is based at Monash University’s Clayton campus. While most of our members are Monash students who relish the opportunity to continue playing their instrument (or to take up a new one!) while studying at university, we also welcome all Monash staff, students from other campuses, and members of the wider community who are looking for an opportunity to undertake challenging repertoire in a fun and relaxed setting. Don’t play an instrument, but still want to be involved with one of the most socially active societies at Monash? You can join as one of many non-playing members!

In case you're not convinced yet, here are three great reasons to join the phil:

Great Music

Be a part of the best musical groups for miles around. Orchestra plays a diverse range works from all eras, from full symphonies by the classical greats to daring modern works by contemporary composers. The Symphonic Winds is a dynamic and close-knit musical collaboration led by a stunningly talented former committee member, Ms Ingrid Martin. Our Stage Band, "MoJO", performs regularly all around Melbourne, including well-known Jazz institutions. Our smaller chamber ensembles find themselves constantly bombarded by offers to play prominent gigs around Monash University!

Check out the ensembles page to see what the groups are doing this year.

avast, ye scurvy dog We do so much more than turn up to rehearsals once a week, play some music, then go home… It begins with a post-rehearsal trip to McDonald’s. Suddenly, you find that you’ve cleared your schedule for the Annual Monash Phil Minigolf Championship. Next, you’re getting a table of your friends together to join in our famous Trivia Night, and worrying about what you’re going to wear to the Monash Phil Cocktail Party.

We also run three rehearsal camps each year, where we hone our skills with intensive rehearsals during the day and let our hair down in the evening!

Great Opportunities

Being student run gives our members the freedom to do amazing things, both in and out of the musical sphere. Our own members have composed original works for us to play, conducted entire symphonies and organised gigantic music festivals - simply because they wanted to. Each September members elect a committee of 11 to run the society on their behalf. Their tireless commitment is further tribute to the genuine community that exists around the Phil.

Our umbrella organisation is the Clubs & Societies division of the Monash Student Association.

Membership Fee

To help us provide these great opportunities and music for rehearsals and concerts, we charge a yearly membership fee.

$30.00 - Non-Culture Card
$25.00 - Culture Card (can be acquired if you are a Monash Clayton Student)

This can be paid in the first few rehearsals at the start of the semester.
